Lead-acid battery is composed of positive and negative plate, partition, shell, electrolyte and wiring pile head, etc. The chemical reaction of discharge is dependent on positive plate active substance (lead dioxide and lead) and negative plate active substance (sponge-like pure lead) under the action of electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid solution), in which plate grid frame. Traditional batteries are made of lead-antimony alloy, maintenance-free batteries are made of lead-calcium alloy, the former with antimony, the latter with calcium, which is the fundamental difference between the two.

Because the maintenance-free battery uses the lead calcium alloy grid frame, the water decomposition generated when charging is less, the water evaporation is low, and the shell is sealed structure, the released sulfuric acid gas is also less, so compared with the traditional battery, it does not need to add any liquid, and have less corrosion on the wiring pile, wire and body, strong resistance to overcharging, large starting current, long storage time and other advantages, by the car users welcome.

The maintenance-free battery in some cars are also equipped with a temperature compensation type hydrometer, which can indicate the storage state of the battery and the height of the electrolyte level. When the indicator eye of the hydrometer is green, it indicates that the charge is sufficient and the battery is normal; If the indicator eye has few green dots or is black, the battery needs to be charged. If the indicator eye is light yellow, the battery is faulty and needs to be repaired or replaced. If the oil circuit in the car is like the blood vessels in the human body, then the electric circuit in the car should be compared to the nerves in the human body. The brain centers that control nerve movements in the car are batteries and generators.

The battery and the generator work in parallel. When the engine is running, the generator mainly supplies power to the electrical equipment. When the electric energy emitted by the generator is rich, the rich electric energy is converted into chemical energy by charging the battery and stored. When it is needed (such as when the engine starts or the voltage emitted by the generator is too low to supply power to the outside), it is converted into electric energy to supply the electrical equipment. When the generator fails, the battery can be used as emergency power supply to ensure that the electric equipment on the vehicle can be used in a short time. In addition, the battery also plays a role in stabilizing the voltage of the whole vehicle electric system.
