What is a lead-acid battery

2023-02-09

The Lead acid battery (VRLA) is a battery whose electrodes are mainly made of lead and its oxides, and whose electrolyte is a solution of sulfuric acid. In the discharge state of Maintenance Free Lead Acid Battery, the main component of the positive electrode is lead dioxide, and the main component of the negative electrode is lead. In charging state, the main component of both positive and negative electrodes is lead sulfate. Divided into exhaust Maintenance Free Battery and maintenance-free lead-acid batteries.

The most obvious feature of lead-acid batteries is the plastic seal on the top that can be unscrewed, and the air hole above it. These caps are used for filling pure water, checking electrolytes and discharging gases. In theory, lead-acid batteries need to check the density and liquid level of the electrolyte at each maintenance, if there is a lack of distilled water to be added. However, with the upgrading of battery manufacturing technology, lead-acid batteries have been developed into lead-acid maintenance-free batteries and colloid maintenance-free batteries. There is no need to add electrolyte or distilled water in the use of lead-acid batteries. Mainly using the positive electrode to produce oxygen can be absorbed in the negative electrode to achieve oxygen cycle, can prevent water reduction. Lead-acid water batteries are mostly used in tractor, tricycle, car starting, etc., and maintenance-free lead-acid batteries have a wider range of applications, including Uninterruptible Power Supply, electric vehicle power, electric bicycle batteries, etc. Lead-acid batteries can be divided into constant discharge (such as uninterruptible power supply) and instantaneous discharge (such as car starting batteries) according to the needs of the application.

The battery is mainly composed of tubular positive plate, negative plate, electrolyte, separator, battery groove, battery cover, pole, liquid injection cover, etc. The electrode of the exhaust battery is composed of lead and lead oxide, and the electrolyte is an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. The main advantages are stable voltage and cheap price; Disadvantages are low specific energy (that is, electric energy stored per kilogram battery), short service life and frequent daily maintenance. Old ordinary battery life in 2 years or so, and the need to check the height of the electrolyte and add distilled water regularly. But technology has made lead-acid batteries last longer and easier to maintain.
